Public School
A MyAutismTeam Member asked a question 💭

I have decided to pull my son out of The Ohio Virtual Academy (online schooling) and put him in public school for 2nd grade. I am having second thoughts and I am driving myself crazy. There are no schools for autism locally, so this was my main option. He will be in a self contained classroom.

Does anyone have any opinions or experience with their child going to public school?

TIA

Thank you @A MyAutismTeam Member ! He's been in school for a few weeks and he seems to like it! Always happy when I drop him off and pick him up! I am super excited to see where he goes from here :)

I, too, have driven myself crazy with the question of public school or not. Our son has been in the school system pre-school and pre-K program, and now he is transitioning to a Kindergarten readiness program. I echo what @A MyAutismTeam Member said. I have been fierce in my advocacy for my son, and the principal said he wished more of his parents were advocates for their children in that way because maybe then the school system would really change. You can get what you need for your child if you take the approach to befriend (the teachers) and defend (your child.)

Hi @A MyAutismTeam Member , I just came across this post as my son is also in self contained at public school, and wanted to say that I absolutely love it! I feel like he is getting a world of therapy and learning by people who truly care and are knowledgeable. He gets some inclusion time at different parts of the day with typical peers, which to me is better for us than a specialized autism school.
