My son 10, 5th grade, HFA, sever social anxiety, doesn't have anyone to hangout with at recess. He just plays with dirt and sits watching the other kids play. Yes, ask for speech for expressive language to help him with social skills. Also, ask for ABA to help him in class or in this case recess. Good luck!
Yes as parents we are our childs biggest voice.My son has same issues but under his iep he goes in social groups to interact with other children.you can always call a meeting to address any concerns.
Yes, goals around both social and emotional needs can be written into your child's IEP. It's great that you are aware of those needs so that you can bring them up at the meeting and help decide what type of supports would be best, how progress will be measured, and how often you will receive progress updates on those goals.
Yes. The social worker at our school works with the ASD kids on socializing. They play games, and help stimulate conversations. She used to be assigned an older kid to play with her at recess too. The social worker has her own set of goals as well added to the iep. If the school isn't responsive to this idea go to the special education department for your district.
