Appling For SSI For Child With ASD
A MyAutismTeam Member asked a question 💭

Hi, I applied for SSI for my child when he was 4 and was denied twice. The reason stated was he wasn’t impaired enough. I think I was too optimistic when answering the case workers questions. And what should have been no’s or I don’t know I said he’s attempting. Which I’m sure can only be interpreted as a yes he can. My sister thinks I should reapply, but I’m not so sure. Has anyone applied, got denied, tried again and got different results. Thanks so much for any and all info and/or advice.

From my understanding, the best way to get SSI is with a lawyer. If you try first on your own it impairs the process and makes it even more difficult with each try. But dont feel defeated, there are many SSI attorneys that are affordable and fast. To anyone else reading this and looking into SSI....use a lawyer first because a denial is hard to turn around. It was probably the only thing my husband ever took on for my son years ago. I came home and he said we were denied because how much money he makes and I lost it because I had planned on contacting an attorney and getting that denial makes it harder to get done after that...even with a lawyer. Always use a lawyer unless you have an easy case for decision.

Same thing happened to me. I applied for SSI 2 years ago, when my Aspie was 12. We were denied for the same reason and I never reapplied. It can't hurt to reapply, right? Give it a shot.

Yeah, those questions or maybe the questioner make me feel so nervous. It’s like an interrogation. I get it that they are trying to get the people who really need the help the assistance, but I feel that sometimes their vetting system can block out the honestly needy people just because they are not experts at navigating the system.
