Autistic Littles And Church
A MyAutismTeam Member asked a question 💭

Hi all. My question is: Does anyone go to church with their ASD little ones? Do you feel welcome? My son is non-verbal but he makes a lot of vocalizations. I don't want to bother the other folks at church, but i also want us to be able to attend church as a family. My son would not be able to leave our side and go to any of the Childrens' ministry rooms; he would stay with us the whole service. I am so afraid people will wish we hadn't come; this is my biggest reason for not going. We get lots… read more

Tbh, we have not attended Mass since the pandemic started. We watch on EWTN or read online. But when my son was younger, he sat at the back row or the soundproof room (speaker inside) so we could listen to the priest. If for some reason he wanted to leave, my husband took him outside so he could play on the playground across the street while his brother and I stayed until the end. Everyone at our church is understanding. Now that he is older, I’m sure he’s okay with it now.

It really is up to you and what you want to expose your child to. There are many people who would not be bothered in certain social events, but there are many more who would care and stare at your kid like it’s the thing to do. If you are not bothered by the ignorance of others then go. However there are some social gatherings that you might have to refrain from attending only out of respect for others and where disruption could get uncomfortable.

I've had those feelings also, when they were little. Eventually, I realized they were only feelings and not what people were actually thinking. One Sunday, I had my hands full with a newborn and an angry four year old that didn't appreciate the new addition. She got away from me and crawled under the pews, around people's feet and up to the altar. Once I was able to nab her, I quickly packed up my crying baby, and my naughty preschooler and left. The next week, I didn't want to go because I was sure everyone was wishing I would not show up. I went anyway, and an older woman in our parish ran up to me with a homemade rosary to give me, and she told me I was an inspiration as a mother. I still have it. It still makes me cry to think how I was wrong about what people think. Now that mine are all older, I love hearing little ones at church, even the ones that can't sit quietly.

I’m sorry your feeling this way, I’m not Christian however I would think they would welcome you and wouldn’t judge you on something you can’t control. Sometimes our own insecurities are the only obstacle in the way. I do know how your feeling though Iv missed out on many activities/events thinking this way but in the end I think if someone is going to judge them well that just makes them an awful person who I wouldn’t waste my time worrying about. I hope you figure things out.

Like I've said my daughter is 12 years old she has ADHD, autism and PTSD and she does well in the church setting. We are members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints and she really loves reading the Book of Mormon and she really enjoys going to church. In fact, she got upset when General Conference came around not this past weekend but the one prior and she wasn't able to go to church. She has even made the comment that she cannot wait for her chance to be baptized.
