Did your child benefit from being around neurotyoical children in a regular preschool or a special needs preschool( school) was a better fit for his/her needs? Please share your thoughts. Thank you!
In my county the Early Intervention and Shelby Hills Preschool work closely together so I did not need to look for this type of preschool. Do you have a board of developmental disabilities or something similar through your county of residence? They may be able to put you in contact with an advocate. The advocate is a troubleshooter and they help you find services.
Hi, Ashley! Thank you for sharing your experience! I am not sure how to find a mixed classroom for my child yet. I does sound like a wonderful and a right option for us. How did you find your preschool? Did anyone give you reference or you checked them out yourself? So far I have been dealing with CDS and Autism Society in my state. But their advice was to start looking by ourselves for a good fit.
Hello. My son definitely benefited from a mixed classroom. Not sure if you have that option where you live. In preschool he was in a mixed class of typical and special need peers. In kindergarten he would be in the special ed classroom and go to the typical classroom for a few activities throughout the day. Now he is in first grade. He is in the typical classroom with an aide most of the day and 30 mins in special ed classroom.
A mixed environment is great because peers are great models. Whether a child can benefit from a typical classroom depends on an individual basis.
