What are the post secondary options for those being Moderate when referring to the spectrum ( behavioral assistance with staying on track with the task at hand and that has "some" verbal skills like phrasing or using an ipad communication device or app, but rarely making compete whole complete conversations)? I am curious to know if there are even "options" at all rather than just staying in a school aged program until 21. What do the options look like ( details). Thank you kindly for any and… read more

Here in Pasadena, CA, via the school district, there is what is called Adult Living Skills. Check via Google in your area, if you have an IEP in place ask the school district about it. Here is goes until my son is 22. This program also has something called workability. It provides work training with participating businesses at 3 hours a week.

Its that sometimes we dont know as parents where to turn so my point really is that your childs school district should be a resource to ask questions to, next your regional center. A workability program may exist but under a different name. I was simply using whats here in my area as an example. I would have never known about the adult living skills program here if it were not for my sons speech therapist. She mentioned it, I was like whats that, she put me in contact with the program coordinator and i had it added to his exit IEP. I can almost guarantee you there is atleast one program out there in your areasomewhere.

My second son, my boys are twins, is a bit higher functioning and I was able to get him a job at my work part time. I dont know if that could be another option to explore. You have quite a handsome son, have you thought of looking into companies that specialize in modeling, commercials or movies for people on the autism spectrum. Dont laugh because there are a few stars with cerebral palsy, down syndrome, autism who make it in the industries. Simply lookup John Taylor from The Seventh Sign fame, starring with the likes of Demi Moore. Just kind of think out of the box.

Do a Google search for adult day programs in your area, they generally have several different program options depending on age and abilities.

Steve....thank you for your response. So.... California is one of the few states that does to 22? That is a good thing. I appreciate you taking the time to tell me what is in your area.
