Hi, I see your son is 5? A lot can happen in 11 years of growth and development but YES, young adults with ASD absolutely can learn to drive a car. I agree with the other posts and it does depend on the child. I’m not aware of any statistics regarding your question. My ASD son talks about wanting to drive and is excited at the thought. I see you’re doing ABA, our ABA company told us many years ago the ABA can be a lifetime opportunity with kids doing ABA on and off as they may need help with obstacles. Our old company had an ABA program to help kids learn to drive when they were ready.

I’m thinking at the rate of advancement in self driving cars that in the next decade most new cars will have a self driving option anyway 🤷‍♂️

I think location is a factor too. We live in a suburb of NY…so there isn’t the crazy driving like in the City…where Dennis SELDOM drives. He had over 20 hours of driving lessons…but worth the expense. He’s been driving 10+ years…does a GREAT job 👍🏽

I learned to drive at 17. I got my permit that year and my license the following year. I was hesitant at first, but once I started, I caught on quickly and am glad I drive now! I have the freedom to come and go as I please :)

It depends on their level . If they need constant supervision then you know that won't work. If they are somewhat independent then it's possible.
