What Life Skills Do You Teach?
A MyAutismTeam Member asked a question 💭

Do you teach how to shake hands? I’m teaching to ask before hugging someone.
I know to teach how to do chores, self care, and how to be polite. I’m not teaching social skills specifically right now.

Yes she’s 7. I’m just trying to get through her morning routine and getting her to brush her teeth and eat her cereal with a spoon.

It will be more important when your daughter gets older-for example, applying for a job, how to dress for the appropriate occasion, etc.

Money management, budgeting, paying for items, cooking, safety while out in the community.

Those all make sense. I’m reading a book about teaching life skills to kids with autism. So far I agree with doing chores. I know that they need to know self care and tasks of daily living. There’s also chapters about punctuality, appropriate attire and manners. This includes shaking hands. I don’t know if that’s on the top of my list.
