When Is The Right Time To Have Our Son To Be More Integrated Into General Education
A MyAutismTeam Member asked a question 💭

Hi my son is 7 years old and has been in ABA program for 4 years. He just started his 2nd grade and is now in LLD program. My wife and I feel that my son needs to be integrated/shouldve been more integrated into gen ed class more to be able to have him learn with his peers.. so that he doesnt fall too behind and later have mental emotional issue when he starts to realize that he cannot do what other peers do in their classroom or also in non classroom setting
Schools seems to be not setting… read more

This is hard as you have to fight for what is best for your son. Have a district ESE compliance person or an outside advocate (you can use your ABA therapists) at your IEP meetings. Make sure that every detail on what you would like for him to accomplish is written clearly in the IEP and make sure the school can accommodate. He has a right to the Least restrictive environment. You can also request that they add staff training into the IEP so that teachers know how to help him. Sadly enough teachers aren't trained that way. Also, if needed, you can request (in writing) for an IEE to be performed. That’s an Independent Education Evaluation. The schools pay for that. That’s a more in-debt evaluation than an FBA. Hopefully your ABA therapist is a vendor of the school that way they can come provide their service inside the school as well. I encourage you to listen to a podcast from Holly Blanc Moses “The Autism and ADHD” podcast. She has wonderful information in her shows.
Hope this helps!

To be honest, schools can only do so much, people can only do so much and it’s sad to say as parents with children with disabilities WE need guidance in all aspects, especially in schools because our kids are not the same as other kids they require full attention, support, love ( patience), has to be educated and experienced. You can try dividing his hours at school by being in the gen ed class and the LLD program. My daughter goes to school in the morning for 4hrs then we have ABA in the afternoons.

I wish my daughter had your problem. She's never been in a mainstream class and I worry that some time she'll wonder why she didn't get a diploma or get some kind of a job in the future. Your son should go for the least restrictive environment and if it doesn't work out he can go back to the specialized classroom. I still remember asking my daughter's first teacher about how many kids transitioned to a regular classroom. She said "Not many."

My son goes to a ABA therapy center all day instead of the public school. They have worked wonders with my son and he loves going.
