Have you tried potty training books or videos? My son is a visual learner.

My son just turned 5 and he is also mostly non-verbal. We have been potty training him for the past year but have had recent success at least with one of his bathroom functions (pee). He will now go by himself, flushes the toilet, pulls up his pants after he finishes and now even shuts the bathroom door! Going by himself just started happening in the past couple of months as before he’d tell me or I would notice he probably needed to go.

Going poop is another story as he is still resistant to the idea so we have to put him on the toilet and work with him. He does not wipe himself, however, we have to do that. We thought at first he was constipated and he saw a pediatric gastroenterologist but we all came to the conclusion he was just fearful and it was a sensory issue. Just keep working with your son and he will finally “get it”. Also, does he wear pull-ups or underwear? My son didn’t like the sensation of having accidents and wet pants and the pull-ups were getting too tight so he made the connection that using the toilet meant looser underwear in fun designs like Paw Patrol (ha-ha) and that helped him understand and accept the idea. Good luck to you and your son and I hope he makes more progress soon!

I potty trained my daughter at around 5, shes also non verbal. I did it over the summer n literally spent every single day mostly in the bathroom every 30 mins i sat her in there, i had specific sensory toys to play with just for potty training. Ide train from like 7am- 7pm every single day is how i did it. Ash regressed a handful of times and i had to re train. Shes been accident free at home 2 yrs. Also is finally potty trained at school as of a month ago. 🎉 Shes still not potty trained in public since terrified of public restrooms so im trying get her over that fear than ill start trying potty train in public.
Youll train your son, lots and lots of repetition. Try making it fun with toys, and reward if goes pee in toilet. U have make the bathroom fun. As with the wiping i did hand over hand with her than it clicked.
Goodluck!
