My son is 9 year old with high functioning Autism, ADHD, and high IQ. He wanders off at times when he gets agitated, angry, or bored. I need something I can use to find him quickly, since the past incidents have been in large, crowded areas where it is hard to find him. He can run away quickly and sometimes hides. Last night, he ran away from me on Michigan Ave in Chicago and I was near panic because I couldn't find him for several blocks. He would throw off a device if it isn't something I… read more

Hey MAT family, I'm back to blogging for Detroit Moms Blog. I need your help. When your child was first diagnosed, what terms or specific language did you struggle to understand? What words or phrases made you feel as if the therapist or doctor were speaking another language? Trying to make an unofficial glossary for parents of newly diagnosed kids. Thanks!

My son was sent home with a REED form and a Special Ed Parent handbook. He attends a Charter school and the school seemed reluctant at first to move forward with any services. I thought I would be getting a narrative screen form but instead they sent home a REED. I called today to speak with the Speech Pathologist who also will be leading the evaluation and I mentioned a few other concerns I had not thought of prior which was Dyslexia and Disgraphia. And she said that it seems those two… read more
Anyone have experience with the PLAY Project? What did you think of it? The good and the bad? 🙂
I just had my home visit for IHSS. I live in San Diego County, CA. I had my sons doctor fill out the initial form as requested. The social worker who is in charge of my sons case was not helpful. She had me explain all of Lucas' abilities/inabilities & basically said she needs me to right up a statement noting all of Lucas' "severe" behaviors. She said he would only be eligible for 24 hr home care. I'm confused on what they are looking for when it comes to this statement. I explained everything… read more

I ma of course not going to mention the school here. But my 5 years old child has accused the principal of beating the crap out of him. I believe him. He repeated his story to the police twice, once with me, once without me. There is a police investigation going on. He is still in the same school, and the principal is still taking care of him 1 on 1, which to me is highly abnormal. That's the tip of the iceberg of his issues at this school, the same principal had also sent me the police and CPS… read more
Wow that is terrible! I'm sorry I don't know of a journalist but I just wanted to say, maybe you should pull your son from that school and figure out something better for him. Definitely doesn't sound… read more
We live in Puyallup, WA & my son has his IEP due at the end of April. I am very unhappy with the school & have attended the meetings alone in the past. My son is in a Gen Ed class they do not communicate to me about behaviors or issues even though we have discussed it. I don't believe his "support person" even knows what Autism is. I want to know if there is someone that I can reach out to that will help me so the school does not keep jerking me around. Thanks!
I highly recommend a psychologist or psychiatrist. I'm currently using a psychologist, and it has worked wonders. I think they're cheaper than an attorney, but if it gets to that point, they will… read more
