Eliminate any sensory issues in the bathroom. Urinating is fast but the longer time spent pooping might be too overwhelming. Make sure the lighting is not harsh, and there are not sounds or smells… read more
My son is 15, diagnosed as PDDNOS and will to to high school. Though he has shown remarkable progress each year, one area of concern remains: He does not want to read or follow a story. This affects his comprehension and performance in ELA. I am also afraid that this will make it very difficult for him to do self-study in future - unless I get to address this now.
Has anyone faced such a problem? Is there a diagnosis for this behavior/disability and does anyone know of any strategies on how to… read more
Thank you all for your very useful advice. I will try Lindemood Bell and work with him. No, he does not like to read comics. I am continuing to try and get him interested in comics, but no real… read more

My sons and i will be moving to anchorage alaska in about a year. Has anyone had any experience with the special education services? I have done online research. But first hand knowledge from parents will be a lot more helpful
I heard that Alaska is one of the worse states for autism resources.
We are guardians for our 10 year old grandson with high functioning autism. We have been accepted by San Andreas Regional Center for services and are seeking an ABA Therapist in South Santa Clara County (Morgan Hill/Gilroy area). He is on Medi-Cal so we need a provider who will work within Medi-Cal. SARC tells us to find a provider through Medi-Cal. Medi-Cal tells us to go through Anthem Blue Cross. Anthem gave us the names of two providers, neither of which have availability for the… read more

You may get an answer if you ask the Special Ed Examiner at http://www.examiner.com/special-education-in-na...
My previously nonverbal daughter started becoming more verbal in oct of last year. Since then her words have come a long way but are still difficult to understand at times. Like for example, she say "doh" instead of "no" or "chiss" for "chips", and "nana" for "banana." I am wondering if that's a normal thing (if there is a normal) when their language is emerging and just needs more use and fine tuning, or if it could be more. Like Apraxia? Can Apraxia be present in conjunction with ASD?
My sons speech started out the same way. Each year his speech improves & is over 95% intellible now (age 10). He still has trouble with pronunciation of unfamiliar words & there are some words I… read more
My 5 year old is suppose to be starting school this year and soon. He's not ready for Kindergarten and it's evident (never still, never quiet). I don't know if I can send him to Pre K due to his age or not. Where I live there are no resources for ASD and I can't find anything on the website for my school district to help. Does anyone know if a 5 year old can go to Pre K? I'm in Whitfield County, Ga if that helps.
I got little books from my Wal-mart store for my boys for grades pre-k and kindergarten. We worked on them together and also told them fun story's from when I was in those grades. Before school… read more
Our family is looking to relocate. Where is the question? We need to be in an area suitable for our special needs children. They are both very friendly and would like to have friends more like them. Vinny, my 8 year old, feels the barrier between him and his classmates. Looking for a warmer climate (I get seasonal depression very badly), good supports for the kids, a good school system, and in a supportive community. Taking any and all ideas!!!! Thanks in advance for any help.
Are you looking for an Autism only school, or mainstreaming your children in to a public school? Have you thought of moving to Ohio, Illinois etc. I live in MD, which has all four seasons. My… read more
Jaxson attended K5. he was transported to the school and they accepted him in their zone last year. this year they said he can't attend due to their classes are full with local students. Just got the letter today about this. School starts on August 12. What is his legal rights as to going to that school again this year.
thanks Michellemw - I will tell my son about this.
My daughter will be entering the 2nd grade. The public schools in our district are either unable or unwilling to provide my daughter with a dedicated aide, so she can attend classes. Last year we homeschooled but the program was not appropriate for her. She is nonverbal and has trouble focussing. The homeschool program we enrolled in didn't have any alternative curriculum for my daughter even though they had promised a fully customizable curriculum that was ideal for a special needs student
