My 4 year old takes Tenex. We have not had any weight gain issues with it. It was originally marketed as a high blood pressure medication and so it literally slows kids down...My son has had great success with it. Within maybe a week of taking it, his verbal skills took a HUGE leap and I found that he was much easier to handle.

Folks - there is a new genetic test (just a blood test) out there that can check the child's liver functions. This test will show three columns of drugs.. a Do Not Use, Use with Caution and Recommended list. My son for a year was on meds and we tried a host of different ones - turns out all of them were on the do not use and use with caution list. Please ask your psychiatrist about it. Now he's on Seroquel with no side affects - it was the only drug on the approved list and it's working for him finally.

My 5 year old takes Risperidone. We have had no weight gain issues either and the difference in his personality is amazing. Works wonders for us for now.

Friday, I took Cammi for an emergency visit to her doctor. She had been changed from Risperdone (because of weight gain and lethargy) to Fluvoxamine. After a couple of weeks on the Fluv, she started to cross her eyes, keep her head down all the time and was not responding to questions at all where before she was doing much better interacting. So, the doctor changed her to Abilify. She has also been on Topomax for over a year and takes Melatonin on Sunday nights to get her on schedule for the school week. Doc said to take her off of Fluv for two days before starting the Abilify which she had a stomach virus over the week-end and couldn't have held it down anyway. The two days she was sick and off of her medicine you could sure tell she was off of it - her temper was terrible. She was upset over everything, throwing things, screaming, hitting whoever she could get to. She has taken 1mg. of Abilify for two nights and the eye-crossing/head down has stopped and seems to be handling her temper much better. Poor baby had a stomach virus over the week-end that she caught from me (school teacher who catches everything from the students) and has/had a bad cough for two weeks and a cold so headed back to the doctor in a few minutes for THAT. Shewwwww, it's never-ending. Forgot to mention, I had to attend a funeral yesterday for my brother-in-law 3 hours away yesterday after losing my Mom to cancer in December. We have had a tough time lately to say the least.
