Crossing Eyes, Squinting, Less Verbal Communication? Could These Be Indications Of Seizure Activity??
A MyAutismTeam Member asked a question πŸ’

I'm so glad to have found this site! I have tons of questions but will start with one that's very concerning as of this past week-end. My daughter, Cammi, whose 11 yrs. old and has high-functioning autism/very low verbal functioning, was recently taken off of Risperdone (3 wks. ago) because of weight gain and underactivity. She was gaining weight steadily and had no interest in moving around any more. Before starting the Risperdone last year, she was very active - riding her bike, her… read more

a petit mal seizure will usually present as an unresponsive child (seems not to hear you) sometimes they will stare into space, gurgle or talk gibberish. I've had seizures since I was a kid- for me those blank stares are the brain "caught" on something and unable to move on. Kind of like a computer frozen as it processes a command. A grand mal seizure will be a flown blown arms flailing fall on the floor seizure that will last long enough that there will be no doubt what it is. There are sometimes severe headaches after either type of seizure. A neuro can do an EEG and let you know, without any doubt, if your daughter is having seizures.

Check the website Web meds to study both medications and see if maybe she should have been weaned off of the Risperdahl. It is a a mood stabalizer isnt it? Abilify is I know and I had the choice of these two with mine. The antidepressant she is on now, is it the same as prozac? With no mood stabalizer can cause mania in some. If she is non verbal she cannot tell you whats going on in her head. I dont know you or your child well enough to say but definatly would give it some thought. Talk to the medication Dr. and also study the medicine. A book called "The bipolar child the 3rd edition" has all the medication listed with the side effects and what not to mix in the middle of it. It was written by Janice and Demetri Papalos. Great Resource to have on hand for meds. Along with the web MED site!

Have you done any research on the side effects of the new medication? Many anti-depressants can cause dizziness and some cause changes in the eyes such as weakening vision. Was she weaned off the risperdone or taken off cold turkey? Even though it has been three weeks since she was taken off the risperdone she could still be going through withdrawls if she was not weaned off? Only my thoughts.

Does she realize she's doing it? I know some of my daughter's meds have had a side effect of causing tics. Could that be it? Definitely follow up with the prescribing dr.
