Does Anyone Have Information On Independent Living?
A MyAutismTeam Member asked a question 💭

My son is 21, lives with me and I need to plan for his future! He is on 100% disability and could work part-time if the situation was right. He is social. He can take care of his daily needs but needs help with finances, driving, etc.

I used to help with a program that placed people with disabilities with workers for x number of hours per day in an apartment. The worker would come in, help with grocery lists, take them shopping, take them to doctor appointments, check in on them, and, on occasion, run programs with them. Is your son getting SSI or Medicaid? Contact your state agency for people with disabilites...I only knew Utah's...it's DSPD...to see if he qualifies for any state funds or programs. Another route to go would be to look into agencies that run several group homes. Call them. If they don't have an independent living program, they probably know of another agency that does and THEY can help you find the funding for it because it's how they make money. I hope this helps!
