In NJ And Thinking Out Of The Box For Housing Options For My 22 Year Old Daughter Who Is PDD/NOS.
A MyAutismTeam Member asked a question 💭

SSI will not cover the cost of an apartment and expenses. I know HUD has some programs out there, but I understand there is a minimum income involved and our young adults do not make the cut based on their SSI only.
Am hoping some other paretns are out there and would like to explore options for their young adult women. Am thinking a two bedroom apartment with supports in place to help them. Anyone with any ideas or suggestions would be appreciated!

That is precisley what Evelyn Dudziac did with Katies House. You could certainly contact her .....she even wrote a book about the process. She continues to fundraise for the home. It is running and very efficient now. She became a C309 charity, raised money to buy the home in Newton, NJ, had individuals and companies donate time, money and appliances and got the house up and running. It is a well oiled machine. Contact her at [[email: [[email: [[email: (Email address can only be seen by the question and answer creators)

Are you part of an agency that deals with adults with disabilities? Look into that, and they should be able to help you find a residential program called supportive apartment program. Good luck.

Thanks Jim. However, I do know that if Rebecca moves out of state, she no longer qualifies for funding through the state for aides and day programs. I would have to start all over with PA. Not an easy task Also, since she has established a routine and structure since graduation with the activities I have her involved in here, it is difficult and upsetting to make drastic changes with these young adults without fallout!
I have checked with ARC of NJ and they offer housing through agencies approved through our Division of Developmental Disabilities. My daughter is over #3000 on the waiting list and that is not even the priority waiting list that comes first. Waiting for housing options through the state could take years and may not even be a good fit for her when they come to fruition. I really do not want a state run facility as I would not have a say in who is working t the facility. I would like to have the option to hire or fire the personnel that work with her, that is why I am trying to think put of the box for doing this on my own.
Section 8 housing vouchers have gone defunct and are no longer available. That would have been a good option for her to get into an apartment. I would like to get a two bedroom and find like minded parents with a young adult who would share the rent.
I am getting extremely depressed at the lack of prospects for her to live independently.

Jim: Wish I could say the same here for my daughter. I just dont have the funds to do a home purchase. As a single mom and another child to care for that is not on the spectrum, it is difficult.
Therefore, I am looking into an apartment situation that I could fund through my daughters services here in NJ> I just cant seem to find help with rental assistance. It is very sad, but many of us parents are in the same boat.

Yes, she is starting up a new home in her area for a several young men. We had spoken about starting another for Rebecca, but once again, I do not have the funding...would have to raise funds. Also, she wanted it in her area....I want something closer to me.
