It's like crack to him... he stashes them and will sleep with 2 or 3 of them to make sure he doesn't lose it in the middle of the night. He is SO sensory and this is the ONLY thing he can effectively use to self-regulate, especially away from home (car, restaurant, church, etc). He does not use it at school or during the days on weekends... his teeth are a mess! I'd like to ditch it by his fourth birthday in March :(
My sister talked for awhile about the "binki fairy" coming. Somehow she made it really excited instead of a negative thing. When the binki fairy came she took the binki and left something special.
With ours we just cut the tip so it felt different each day a little smaller til they didnt want it!
@A MyAutismTeam Member, ironically, I am an OT who specializes in SI with ASD (been one since 1994, WAY before I knew Nathan would ever be a part of my life)! We have an OT through the school and both an OT and COTA specializing in SI privately through insurance. Even more ironic, my experience has been that parents of kids with ASD tend to have better advice because they've lived it. Being Nathan's mom has made me the BEST OT ever!!! Our team has given us all kinds of advice but unfortunately, none of it has worked. We've tried all the usual replacement stuff and nothing "does it for him" like the real thing. I was just wondering what other parents had experienced with their kids.
Bubble gum stays hard. I know some people give their kids a wash cloth? I dont think its too sanitary, but!
cut the nipples off and give them back to him. Tell him the nipple magically disappeared from him sucking them all the time. My daughter sucks her thumb and has PDD and is having her thumbs almost raw. I would rather take the nook and do it like that.
