Summer Camps
A MyAutismTeam Member asked a question πŸ’

Hi I live in Central Florida and Im wondering if anyone knows good summer camps that might offer scholarships close to home??? I have a 6 years w/Autism and a 3 year old w/speech dealy only and I need help. I tried to check w/Autism Speaks and my Insurance case manager but really nothing. Today I will be checking with my local YMCA to see if they can help, but I bet it will still be costly. And this will be the 1st time my boys will be going to camp (which I only want it for a few hours in the… read more

I just got the info off the CARD website so maybe there is something helpful there? I haven't been there yet. I have 4 other kids that would want to go so I'll have to see what they offer at the Y. From my past experience with their assistance, it's all based on what you made last year. No exceptions. For us we had a really good last year and have been unemployed for the past 7 weeks but they won't take that into consideration at all, it's all now based on what you made LAST YEAR.

I'm in Central Florida too and was just looking up summer camps. CARD through UCF has a list like Easter Seals (which I believe is sleep over) and a few others but I didn't see anything for scholarships or anything. I'd love to get my almost 10 year old in something but I think it's going to have to be through the Y and saving for it and only maybe for a week or two over the summer. I can't swing the whole summer.

wow so sorry to hear you went thru that....I tried to think about the YMCA once again giving them the benefit of the doubt...but sorry to say they are morons! my child has been in soccer once per year for the past 2 or 3 years...this season, again another coach that just doesn't know how to coach non less know about autism. During the practices my son just not payed attention but then again the coach didn't really involved him much...my last straw was in the 1st game, I knew at that moment he probably couldn't participate in this type of level of soccer w/other kids in his team and the coach was out of it...not really paying attention to my son or the others I went ahead and withdrew him.

Then now, I was trying to find out about the scholarship for swimming classes there, first thing i asked do they accept and know how to deal w/children especially w/autism??? the lady answered hesitating "welllllll, yes we could, well we can't not turn around people!" I almost fainted with her answer what does it mean, that they really don't want to deal w/children with disabilities but by law they have to??? but then we will not pay attention to them???! ugh! i don't know if im just tired of the stupidity of some people or what but Im just not myself today.

Thank you everyone for the ideas! and thank you for your comments I know im not alone! take care!

I live in Deltona, and there are not that many camps around here...mainly YMCA and its so expensive...i'll be going today to check 1st what type of assistance they do and if the atmosphere is good for my kids. I wish I could take them to UCF I've heard many good things of that place CARD but its far away from me. The Easter SEals in Daytona in the past haven't been too helpful so I kind of took them out of my list you know?! thank you for answering! good to know i have people around to help!
