Has Anyone Successfully Toilet Trained A Teenager Or Adult?
A MyAutismTeam Member asked a question 💭

It is possible that my son's toileting woes are due to encopresis. I'm trying to get him regular in the hopes that I can help him complete his toilet training. Has anyone out there been able to do this with a teenager or adult?

I am so sorry I feel for you and your son. The GI specialist feels Russell doesnt have a megacolon yet but he has had 2 impactions over the last 6 months. He has been on a regimin of 8 tablespoons of mirlax and 2 senakot tablets a day for the last 8 months with now help! the GI specialist is the one who explained to my son and I about the link betweent he brain and bowel that seem to be missing in ASD children. There is a treatment that the can do but it tends to be painful and will take at least a year or more to have any success if it works at all. Keep in touch with me and maybe we can help each other through this ordeal. My personal email is [[email: [[email: [[email: (Email address can only be seen by the question and answer creators) I dont know if im suppose to give that out but at the same time Im just glad to know my sons not the only on dealing with this issue. How old is your son?

Im not sure what ecopresis is but if it is realating to constipation then a diet high in fiber and a lot of grapes and peaches helps too. I just had my son to a GI specialist this last monday and he said that ASD kiddos have a link missing between their brain and the bowels. The kids tense there rectum muscles instead of relaxing them when they have to poop. My son is 16 and needs 21 grams of fiber a day. Good luck! We went from chornic diareha as an infant to the chronic constipation as a toddler to a teenager.

@A MyAutismTeam Member...doctors orders were to increase fiber supplements (metamucil in drinks or chocolate chews), increase fiber in diet if possible, and do 2 capfuls of Miralax daily while on Spring Break. I'm supposed to report back if that doesn't help. She reminded me that some kids with autism and digestive problems are never potty trained. Her own son is a little older than Alex and he has the same issues.

He will be 17 in a couple of weeks. 8 tablespoons of Miralax? Holy Cow! I wouldn't be able to get off the toilet! I can't get him to take pills so I do the fiber gummies and just shove as much fresh fruit and veggies at him as I can get. I have a feeling the doctor will ask me to increase the fiber as much as I can and call her if it doesn't help. She will give the referral if that doesn't work, though. She has been our pediatrician for 3 years now and she has been really great.
