It's very hard to really label a person's "type" of autism (why it's called a spectrum). To many times there are labels given when the child is young when it can change over time. My daughter has moved across the spectrum from classic to mid-functioning to high functioning but there are times where sensory issues or anxiety can take her right back to classic. I wouldn't be to worried about the label cause the fact is your child has ASD and the important part is building a learning enviornment to help them reach their highest potential and love him/her unconditionally!!

My daughter is also considered moderate. To be mild, you have to present with no intellectual delays or speech delays. To be severe, you generally present as having no speech and very limited intellectual abilities. So moderate means they fall between those two extremes. The good news is, as my daughter's diagnosing doctor told us, the only directions that people move on the spectrum is up! Which means that if she makes sufficient progress she may someday be downgraded to mild. When they are young, all of their sensory issues and behaviors can make it very difficult to assess what their potential for learning really is. As for how often to do therapies, that is a hard question to answer. I hope that your therapists are providing you with strategies to use at home, because the real progress is made when therapies are embedded into everyday life/activities. A good quality preschool program would also be of benefit. Hope this helps!

The most useful therapies I find are behavioral. If your insurance would pay for an applied behavior analyst to come and do a functional behavior assessment of your child, that therapist could then give you many suggestions on how to imbed therapies. We have done such things as use pictures cards for communication, used behavior interventions to reduce or eliminate problem behaviors such as hair pulling, and used discrete trial training to build skills in language and cognition. Even little things such as always requiring a word or a sign before you give them a snack can make a huge difference in the long run.
