Can Anyone Comment On The Orlando, FL Public Schools R/t Autism Services?
A MyAutismTeam Member asked a question 💭

My daughter has HFA (has been mainstreamed in general kindergarten, but still requires social skills therapy and some speech therapy). She will be entering 1st grade next year, and I'm considering relocating closer to family in the Orlando area. Would like to move to Winter Park area, but have heard varying comments about the public schools there being pretty bad, with regards to autism services. Can anyone from that area comment about their experience, as well as what schools/districts you… read more

We moved from Cape Coral, Florida almost 3 years ago to Katy, Texas....The schools here are fabulous..I wouldn't put my kids back in a Florida school if my life depended on it...Good luck with the search

I agree we left Cape Coral to, but it is in the entire state not just that area. We now live in Mass and services are great

I cannot tell you about Orlando specifically, but I can tell you the school systems in Florida in general are way behind when it comes to helping autistic kids, I know this because i was there for four years and left because we could not get anything done. Most of the teachers there are trained in special ed but not autism which is a big problem. My daughter is low functioning, and after preschool there was nothing that could even approach her level. We were advised by her specialists that the state will not provide what she needs and that she will not get what she needs if we stay.

We were actually told by one of the best phsch Dr's in Florida that the state is 20-30 years behind the Notheast part of the country. Also my son who was high functioning and was in a kin class with 7 other students with one teacher and one aid was having issues. There was no ABA or speach going on they just got a little more help than other students in the mainstream classes.

Claire - There 340 parents in the Orlando area registered on the site. You might check with some of them. You can see them all here http://www.myautismteam.com/parents?utf8=%E2%9C...
hope this helps!
