The CARS wouldn't tell you whether or not a child with ASD has MR. That would come from an IQ test like the Weschler or the Stanford-Binet. The CARS just is a behavioral rating for autistic symptoms. If you want to get a sense of whether or not your child may have MR, look at non-verbal cognitive tasks like matching, sorting, or assembling puzzles.

Also a lot of autistic children have differences in the way they process information and think, which can impact how well they test if they do have an IQ test. So the test sometimes doesn't measure their true ability. My daughter went from being untestable at age 3, to scoring at a borderline IQ at age 5, to having a high average IQ at age 10. She is considered to be "high functioning" and is definitely smart, but has a lot of trouble with behavior and social skills.

It has always been explained to me that autistic chiuldren have no set limit when it comes to IQ where a child with mental retardation is only capable of getting so high an IQ I believe it is about 75. average IQ for anyone is going to be somewhere between 85 and 115. My son who has ASD and is high funtioning with moderate autism has an IQ of about 90. that is what the last tests just came back as.

40% of children with a diagnosis of autism (as opposed to Asperger's or PDD) also have mental retardation. MR is having an IQ more than two standard deviations below the mean, or in other words, being at the 7th percentile. And yes, research has shown that children with ASD who do not have MR will respond to therapy better than those with MR.
