...If we try to use the clippers he's too worked up and fidgeting, if we use scissors he acts like ever cut is hurting him any suggestions???
I ordered the Flowbee (vacuum haircutting system) online http://www.flowbee.com/ The only challenge is that it is super noisy and he plugs his ears and streaks but I get the cut done nicely in under 4 minutes by running the attachment over his head with the desired spacer for the shorter length we prefer. Afterwards, I reward my son with 10 star stickers on a token value reward chart that, once filled up with all stars, he can redeem for a trip to the local indoor play place for open play! And, I only need to do this every other month and everybody is satisfied.
This past Saturday we went and got his hair cut at Cool Cuts, it was horrible and wonderful all at the same time. The lady who did his hair was awesome. Literally when I told her he was autistic and how much he hates getting his hair cut, she turned off every tv screen except the one at his station and since no one else was in there getting their hair cut she sent all the other stylists to lunch so that he would have no distractions...it was so great!!! I will certainly be going back
Eddie is also afraid of noises, but over time we have managed to get him to where he can tolerate having the hairdryer on for another child in the room. Some days, he will even allow us to use it on him, though not often. We even use the buzzer sometimes, but he protests and I have to help him through it. We count how long it will take and make sure he is watching a DVD. In the beginning, it used to take two of us to hold him still while a third person used the scissors. He screamed the entire time. That's when I knew I needed to find someone who was good with kids. Start by looking for places that only cut kids hair. Then mention your situation and they will probably have someone in mind that can help. Good luck!
Try to find a haircutter who specializes in special needs children. I'm not sure how common they are, but I have come across a couple near my home. THey take the time to get the child used to them and their surroundings, gain their trust and (if you're lucky) distract them while also minimizing excess surrounding activity. They usually have toys to choose from or a portable DVD player for them to hold in their lap, too.
that's awesome! I'm glad you finally found someone who seems to understand.
