hi
I want to know what is Mixed Receptive-Expressive Communiction Disorde with mild congitive delay
Mixed Receptive-Expressive Communication Disorder is the "jargon" label for educators and therapists that just means that your child has trouble putting the sound of words together with a meaning/image in his/her head.
For example, your child may hear the word "cat," but instead of an image of a cat, a feel of fur, a purring sound, etc. coming into his/her head, there is just the sound of the word.
If you have ever seen the "Peanuts" movies, where the teacher is talking but all you hear is "whuh-whuh-whih-whuh," that's what receptive problems are like. Lots of sound, no real meaning in the sound.
Then, if your child is thinking about a cat, he/she will have the idea in his/her head, but has a great deal of difficulty finding the actual word "cat" to link to it. It is like ALWAYS having that sense of words "on the tip of your tongue" - knowing what you want to say but not finding the word to say it.
Mild Cognitive Delay means your child needs more repetitions to learn a skill than the "average." It means planning for extra time, more times with someone guiding him/her through a skill, and patience! If most people learn something after practicing with help about 5 time, your child may need 10 - 20 times practicing with help.
So - when talking with your child, use short, simple phrases. Whenever possible, use words but also show the actions, have the object there, etc. The more your child hears the sounds and sees what they mean happening right when he/she hears it, the better the chance that the sounds will start to stand out with meaning.
When your child needs to learn something new, be patient, and be ready to help your child with it more times than you would normally expect.
