My son takes 1 Clonidine (as part of his regular regimen) and 2 1mg tabs of melatonin at bed time. It usually does the trick. He's starting puberty, so I may be upping the melatonin at some point. I already increased from 1.5mg to 2 in the last 6 months.
My son takes melatonin. We give him 5mg about an hour before bedtime and it helps take the edge off.
We just started using melatonin to help my son sleep, he is four and he is HFA. It works freakin' wonders!!!!! We found it in a liquid form so we mix it in with his juice at night. Our pediatrician let us know the proper dose, and it has been wonderful so far. He used to fall asleep between 10-11pm and get up at 6am, now he is out at 8pm and up at 6am! The best thing is that melatonin is all natural.
Melatonin comes in 1-3-5-10 mg tablets. I tried 3 mg first and sometimes will give him 2 of those making it 6mg. You have to find what works for your child, but my child if i gave it to him at 8pm he would NOT go to sleep, but i decided to try giving to him at 9pm.He goes to sleep giving to him at 9pm.I read about melatonin and it is all natural, not habit forming, your body already makes it naturally..your body will produce melatonin once you are in darkness. So turn off tv,ipad ,computers ..anyting that radiates light..and he will produce some melatonin as well and the help with the tablets given 30 minutes before you want him to go to sleep..like i mentioned i wanted my son asleep by 8:30pm ,but it would not work..he was to hyper still..i had to make it later..takes it at 9 and is usually asleep by 9:30 or 9:45pm and he sleeps ALL night now until 7am. I hope this helps. You can get melatonin at any vitamon isle at Walmart.
My son takes melatonin as well. EVERYONE I have talked to has suggested it. My son takes 5mg though because he is a teenager. It does seem to help because he can get all turned around on his sleep times if he doesn't.
