For Adult Females With Autism, What Sort Of Experiences Did You Have With Labor?
A MyAutismTeam Member asked a question 💭

For example I knew I was pregnant within a few days of conception, before I could test positive on urine or blood tests. I knew the gender of my children also. I don't respond the same to medications as do neurotypicals apparently. I was refused medicine for my first child because it would slow down the labor, but it was not until I received it that my labor progressed. I am interested in hearing your stories.

I did not know I was autistic until I was given my grandson with level 3 autism to care for last year. I have a lot of issues in and around medications and how they affect me. I have even talked with doctors and nurses and was a nurse myself and still it was never brought to my attention. By the time I had my youngest son I was pretty stressed out about how the labor was going to go despite being with the same doctor midwife and hospital. It was pretty great as far as labor goes. They were able to tweak all the meds or use different ones that worked. Practice makes perfect, I guess! I do think everyone should have a date. No matter if you have a c section or are induced. It is really better for everyone. The baby could still have other plans and come early but for the most part they can stop that as well. When you have other kids or your mom lives out of town or you want to start your maternity leave. It is also better for the doctor ir midwife. If you are having your first baby you should discuss with your doctor all the ins and outs. Epidurals didn’t work for me. They numbed my left leg just perfectly! Read up on induction. Ask what meds they are giving you even if you are neurotypical. With my first child they gave me oxytocin straight up iv drip. It was not working as they wanted and it is just because I have a high pain tolerance (or a different way of showing pain idk). Wound up not dialating to go along with the contractions and my water breaking. I did not know any better and had not done any preparations or even had any idea what actually went on when it was the best case scenario! Now we have way too much information available to us and it still frightens us.

I am not autistic but I knew i was pregnant the day after I conceived. I also knew I would have a daughter. I am however a borderline personality disorder and at times our behavior is almost autistic in nature far more for untreated borderlines.. I received years of therapy before I had my daughter so I still have tendencies but not full blow behavior. There is a part of us that just knows. I find that with my autistic uncle who is adopted he is not as intune with his body as another woman would be but he knows his self. I feel like autistic kids are that intune with their selves far more than they are given credit for

My daughter is autistic, has aspergers. Her pregnancies, she’s on her 4th now she knew right away she was pregnant also but her labors are too fast. Her first was 3 hours, the 2nd she didn’t make it to the car, had the baby on the sidewalk. The 3rd she was induced so she wouldn’t have the baby at home and once it kicked in she was crowning before she knew. She doesn’t feel much until she’s crowning. She’s had all of them natural. Now with this 4th she’s at 6 months pregnant and would love have home birth with midwife but that and birthing centers are not offered where she lives. So she’s terrified how this one will go and is planning to try very hard to take more heed on any symptoms she may be in labor or even thinks she may be and go hospital. She’s just afraid she won’t know again. She doesn’t want a c-section in the worst way so really hates the inductions because they put a time frame on it once they start. So we will see in a few months…. Hope I told you something useful.
