Hi everyone, my 12 year old Jake, who has classic Autism, has extreme sensory issues. We keep a supply of soft ear plugs up at his school for when they have pep rallies and fire alarms. Often they skip the pep rallies when it's just too much (heck, those are sensory overload for me, and I don't have Autism, lol)
We went to his sister's soccer game today, and he was very upset with the clapping and cheering. We didn't bring ear plugs, but he had a chair where he sat with his clip-board drawing… read more
I agree. As he gets older, he will need to help himself manage his symptoms. In group situations, to help avoid meltdowns, he will be able to tolerate more when he knows he has an out.
I think what ever makes him more comfortable .. do it... maybe when he gets older he'll want to try with out the plugs... My 14 yr old told me that loud sounds are very painful for him...smells, crowds in the hallways... and especially pep rallies.. etc... he will probably never go to a dance.. because the music volume would be absolute torture for him... just let him have that option..
My 15 year old (HFA) son had/has that problem at times too. We found that using headphones alone or with some kind of relaxing or music they liked helps. At first he did'nt play part in drills either, but wearing the head phones helped. No at times he does'nt even need to wear them.
thank you Kimmers! I love the headphone idea. And they make such good ones these days. Jake does love music, and that's always helpful.
Hey @A MyAutismTeam Member, that is a GREAT idea - I hadn't thought of that - thanks! ~Anne
