The only way I discovered with my son was to read a paragraph, then pause and ask him basically to tell you what we just read. Then go over the plot after a page or two to make sure they understand. I hope this helps :)

Thanks for the responses. This will help me once she start verbalizing more. She has limited communication feedback. We have a voca machine right now. Looking into the PEC FOR SCHOOL and HOME.

I'm doing the same thing as Laura75. I make sure to get slightly easier books for my son to read and work on comprehension, and we also review storyline frequently. I try to get stories that he will relate to, but if not, then it may provide a good way to explain something new.

practice practice practice! :) ask him questions that will twist the story...predict what will happen next...what could be a different ending....what could be another title...stuff like that...HTH :)

I agree with @A MyAutismTeam Member - that is what I did with my oldest son (who was essentially HFA though he has no label now). I homeschooled him through elementary, and we used the Charlotte Mason style narrating method. It not only worked wonders, but he is now 15 and a voracious reader! Here's a link to the general ideas/concepts, hope you find it helpful, I personally found it to be near "miraculous"!
