Has Anyone Applied For Social Security Benefits For Their ASD Child? How Was The Proces?
A MyAutismTeam Member asked a question 💭

My Ish has recently been diagnosed with ASD and we were looking into applying for social security benefits. I am just looking for advice, answers, insight, help, anything to aide us through this process. Thank you

Eva was approved in 5 weeks. You have to have a TON of supporting information from therapists and teachers stating that your child is unable to perform without difficulties. We sent all of her doctor's records, IEP's and statements from the numerous preschools that we were kicked out of for behavior issues. It can be done! Dont give up!

It is not to bad of a process as long as you have all of your information. You may have to have a face to face meeting with someone at your local office, so make sure you have all the medical information, diagnosis, and notes and records you have. The fact is that if you have everything they want, it will be pretty easy.

They are also interested in financial information because they base what they give you on household income. There is a minimum limit that you can get, however the less you make the more they will give you, I have two ASD kinds, and I am the only one that works in the house so we get the max for both kids. Keep in mind that this is checked and rechecked every so many months, and you are going to have to send them pay stubs for verification.

An example is that I make about the same amount of money every month, however there are a few months a year I get overtime, and on those months we get less money because I make more, and if you send pay stubs in after the fact they will deduct the difference from the next check you get.

Also they consider vehicles you have as income, so we have two used vehicles that are payed for. they work for us, but keep in mind if you go out and buy a new vehicle they are going to hold it against you.

1 Gather EVERYTHING medical psyc therapy iep etc
2 apply online and print out the checklist
3 include repayment information not asked for ie iep, evals etc
4 dont forget contact information.

I applied and got it by myself. I included his psyc eval and iep. Both with the diagnosis of autism. Gave conant information on EVERYONE relevant he had seen gp psyc pt ot speach optist counselor case worker etc.

Some ok many have had issues but its not that difficult to apply, its the people in charge of making the decisions that make this process difficult. Consider asking a advocate for help in making a convincing case for your child.

I was just to look into this too. The income guideline is that monthly? My employer is based out of Ohio and since I work UN the Indiana office, we have to go by Ohio laws. Ohio has no state mandated autism benefits but Indiana does. Very frustrating as my husband has decided to stay home to take care of our kids so my son could get therapy and now schooling thru early interventiin. My insurance actually excludes autism.

I am in The same boat, i try but got rejected. My son needs ot, pt And aba. My daughter has delay she needs pt, ot And speech. They said we make above The max. I went face to face with SSI, they told me to sale my used car to come up with money And said if i have another kid can help us get aid. Why would i put myself on having a child with a disability And The reason we have a second car is to run around with The Kids with there therapies. No sympathy from them.
