My son was diagnosed with PDD-NOS, and we are now testings for Asperger Syndrome, over the last few months every so often my son will get in this mood and not talk no matter what I ask. Rather than taking he will point or make hand motions trying to tell me something. No matter how often I ask him to please use his words, he won't. He gets more frustrated and usually will turn away and not communicate with me at all. I thought about sign language, but was reading an article that kids with… read more
Yes we use sign with our son who is non verbal and it has helped him out so much he now signs to us for some things that he wants instead of screaming all the time. Just make sure you use the words as well with the sign so the hope is that eventually they will start signing with the word and then use just the word.
My daughter is nonverbal on the "bad days." With her flapping it is hard to sign. We use picture cues to get through those days. We just printed them off of clipart that we found online and had them laminated with velcro on the back for easy accessibility. It has made all the difference for us.
Use everything you can to communicate with your child . Sign, act it out, gestures , pictures, writing , drawing , phone app games that are text to speech etc . Don’t get stuck in one modality . Don’t just give him one Choice of speech. Emphasize the important of language not just speech .
Thanks for the ideas everyone, I will try a few. I wish my son could write, we tried that but it's difficult given that his reading is behind and writing is right behind it. his teacher did say that he had trouble getting his ideas down on paper but not so much verbally so maybe i will see about trying sign language and see if it helps anything. I did it long ago for his sister who was behind and in a Early On program (it's called different things in different states) and it helped bridge the words with understanding her. I finally have an IEP meeting with the school on Tuesday to see about whether or not his has a learning disability. it's been a long road, but I'm hoping he will qualify for services in every aspect they can give. at least this year he has a teacher who is behind us all the way. :) I will keep you all updated on how that goes :)
We utilized sign language with my son when he was nonverbal and had major speech delays. It was very helpful!!
