Does Anyone Have Any Advice Or Experience On Using Medication For Aggression For A 5 Year Old.
A MyAutismTeam Member asked a question 💭

My son is 5 years old and was diagnosed with autism at 20 months old. Until this year we never considered using medication. At the end of last year he started hitting, kicking, and biting when someone said no to him, or at times for no reasons at all. He has been on the GFCF diet for years and have also taken many supplements, but the aggression seems to be growing. We just fought to get him in a private school and he should be starting soon. I have been going back and forth in my mind… read more

Oh honey...I too contemplated medication for my son Noah. He is 5 and a half years old and diagnosed with ASD at 3 years and 5 days old. From the age 3-4 was the hardest, as he was non verbal and didn't sleep well, to say the least. I did use 50 milligrams of Trazadone for sleep and that helped. but he was still biting and pinching and hitting and kicking. I decided against the medicine as I was told it caused SEVERE weight gain. And as Noah has gotten older, he has learned to talk in short sentences and the hostility has become very managable. Do you have a pediatric Psychiatrist yet? I took Noah to one for a year and it really helped. Also, have you looked into a pediatric behavior therapist? Just a thought. Will pray for you that the answers will come soon as well as some very good days ahead.

Have you taken him to a psychiatrist? We have our child on Risperadal, but can't say if it is same situation as your child. Also we are on half doses now after 2 years so hoping to phase it out. Good luck!

We have the same issue with my one 5 1/2 year old. He was just diagnosed with ADHD in addition to PDD-NOS. The doctor said some kiddos on the spectrum are more likely to be bipolar as well and some of the meds to treat ADHD, aggressive, etc will make the aggression worse. I'm on a waiting list to have my son see a psychiatrist, but in the mean time we were given a blood pressure medication that has been used with aggressive kiddos (also helps with sleeping/nightmares) to help calm him till we get in to get an evaluation. The med is Tenex. We haven't started it yet as he is going through another eval right now and I don't want to do anything that will change his behavior until this process is done. Good luck and keep me posted. Sounds like we have some similarities.
