Going back to school after an extended break is always difficult for my son. I was wondering what other parents did during their school breaks to keep continuity or help their child to transition back to the school schedule. I would love to hear what other parents do to help with this transition.
We have a white board that we use as a monthly calendar. On it, we put pictures (velcro is your friend) of the major activities of each day.
But more than that, I think for my son its the big change from structured time to unstructured time and back again that is hardest. So we make sure we keep part of his day structured during the break. Then school time and home time don't seem so drastically different.
It helped my son to do a countdown of days so that he knew what to expect.
Thanks for all the answers. They all make sense and I will keep them in mind. :-)
My brother didn't understand time very well so it was always a struggle after a break to get my brother back into a schedule of routine and school. As much as possible, during breaks, don't do any sudden changes in schedule and be careful of who's let into their "space." Depending on the severity of the disorder (my brother's was pretty severe), they may even have delayed reactions to any changes the break brings.
I use a countdown to school too. I don't have a visual reinforcer but I do make a point of mentioning to him every day for maybe 3-4 days before he is to go back to school, "You have 3 more days to play all day and then you go back to school!", etc. It gets on his nerves and he usually ends up telling me to, "Stop saying that!" but I think it helps.
