Girls?
A MyAutismTeam Member asked a question 💭

It's been difficult to find other females on the spectrum. Peers and playdates for my 7 y.o. daughter are getting fewer and farther between, and while we (she is PDD-NOS, I am an Aspie) share many of HFA's more common characteristics, our social and physiological challenges manifest differently. Women and girls, what are your experiences? How do you cope and connect?

Hello, my daughter was originally given a diagnosis of PDD-NOS but that was recently changed to ASD...higher functioning. She tends to gravitate towards other under-dogs who push her around and bully her but she continues to think they are her friends....she is 10 but functions cognitively and socially at a 5-year old level. It breaks my heart to watch her socialize because the girls get irritated by her repetition and fixations/conversations about things that are for younger kids. It's tough especially the older she gets but fortunately she also has a group of a few girls that are sweet and patient with her.

Sign
up for clubs and social groups which your school psychologist should be able to suggest ... Like cooking so the focus is on doing an activity as a group in small group settings....my daughter enjoyed that class and it even got her to try new foods.

I wish u and your daughter all the best!

There needs to be a big change and/or movement in raising awareness and changing the scope of testing that is done on females because they present very differently than males and are often times misdiagnosed or remain undiagnosed for years missing out on the benefits of early intervention. My heart breaks and sings from witnessing the enormous and amazing differences in my son over the last two years thanks to early intervention yet Watching my daughter who approaches 13 become more rigid with more difficult behaviors, detachment and suffering from anxiety which fuels her OCD.

Hi for the very first time my daughter had a attended birthday by 4 wonderful little girls. She turned 10 this year. I have to give the school credit for this one. Kids avoided my daughter due to her outburst of fustration. But this year....Wow.... I do know that most of the children are in an "regular" class. A few of the girls had IEPs. The more my daughter has been thrown into the "regular" class room the more she is coping with noises, social cues, etc.

I don't know if this helped. But she never interacted with kids appropriately until this year and immersion was the answer. (did I spell that right)

7 she wasn't even looking at children as playmates. She called me "That One".
