Potty Problems?
A MyAutismTeam Member asked a question 💭

My ASD daughter is 5-1/2 and still doesn't seem to understand to use the toilet everytime. She is still using pull-ups and comes home from mainsteam school soaking wet because the instructors "didn't have time" to check her. Any ideas to get the school to follow through with IEP and Doctor requests?

Request an IEP to get a designated aide and toileting goal(s) - including a strict schedule to help the aide check your daughter at regular intervals. I stopped using pull-ups since they are designed to "feel" dry. Regular undies will also inspire the school to succeed.

Does she have an aide? Maybe she should? It sounds like someone should be giving her more attention!

My son had an aide that would take him out of classes for 15 minutes twice a day then he had a 45 minute session to do his homework. It was written in his IEP, maybe write the board of education to see what the problem is that they arent doing these things, she has alot of rights under the No Child left Behind rules.

Hi, IEP is a legal document. They can make it that she still has potty breaks and gets a new pull up. So she goes thru the motions.
Advocate involved? Take notes. You don't want your cutie to end up with some terrible rash or even worse infection.
School has to "man" up. Do the right thing and help you with this situation.

you need to go into mediation. if its in the iep they are breaking the law by not adressing it. i have potty trainig assistance in my IEP i know they are not always on top of it but at least they cahnge my childrens daipers.

my ABA sr therapist went to his school last thursday to see what could be done to keep everyone on the same page. if your coodinators/therapists can be a part of the next iep meeting they can impress this upon the school and the RESPONSIBLE teacher/aide. if the teacher is the only one in the classroom request an aide. to be present in the room. remember if you can proove the need for a service then they MUST include it in the iep. budgets are not an excuse.
