Hi Rcurtis, My feelings are most physicians are not going to know much about ASD's unless they're specifically trained in it or know what to look for. They only know medical conditions/issues. We ran into this with our son's pediatrician. We knew something was up and when we asked he was like "well, I haven't sent one to college yet that didn't speak, he's fine". Thank goodness his pre-k teachers picked up on it. They indicated to us that he wasn't "developmentally" where he should have been compared to his classmates. So,it kind of rolled down hill from there. First, a school psychologist observed and evaluated him then she recommended him to be tested further, which we did. A psychologist who has much experience with kids on the spectrum and know to look for would be your best bet. They should spend several sessions with your child observing, evaluating, asking questions, etc. Hope this helps.
