Homeschool Parents?
A MyAutismTeam Member asked a question 💭

How do you plan a homeschool program that involves physio, occupational therapy, and speech?? as well as socialisation.

By law, homeschoolers are eligible to special Ed services in your school district if your child qualifies for an IEP. Just remember that anything offered by your district will be a drop in the bucket compared to what is available by private insurance. When I plan my calendar, I always plug in all my OT, PT etc therapies before I add our homeschool classes.

Socialization in the homeschooling community will take some time and effort. You may have to attend various classes, homeschool events before you find a group who will become your tribe. What I love about homeschooling is that not only do I know all of my son's friends but I also know their parents, their siblings, their pets and how well their chickens are laying.

Your child should be covered for any therapies through your local school district even if you homeschool! They will try to keep from doing it but you can fight it. If your child is eligible for health care through your community, you can probably get help there also. That's how our son gets his speech therapy. As far as socialization, we do Cub Scouts and church. A lot of other people do 4-H, Royal Rangers, Missionetts, and a variety of other programs depending on your area. There are also homeschooling groups that meet in many communities. You can also find them on Facebook and Yahoo. The socialization issue with homeschooling is actually a myth!

Yup, research research research. And I wouldn't overload them with too much social things. That's the great thing about homeschool. My son takes a hip hop class at the YMCA, but I didn't start with that. I started out with their kids club and only took him an hour a day and I got to know the workers really well. It really is all about the people not the actual activity. Then we built a relationship and moved onto various other things...free swim time, and then the big one...hip hop. But everyone knows him there and our family. It's important to build relationships rather than have them in so many "social" settings. Because then people are invested in your child. Hope that helps! =)

Socialization has become one of the big things that anti homeschoolers are putting out there. If you feel you need your children to do more socialization than home, shopping, friends, and church you can also do Cub Scouts, Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts, and 4-H to name a few.
As far as therapy, if your child is eligible for Social Security (If they are diagnosed with autism they should be.) then they are covered for therapy through their medical coverage. If they aren't eliglble because of income then look at your state medical coverage. I know that in Arkansas, they also have a special program for families that aren't covered by either but have a lot of medical appointments called TEFRA.

You just talk to other parents. Search on the internet. Talk to your local providers and agencies. Then stay and observe the groups for a while to make sure your son is benefitting.
