My Favoriate Breed Of Dog Is Rottweiler But I Have No Huge Yard I Would Consider A Rescue But I'm A Litle Afraid Of Not Raising Them2geather
A MyAutismTeam Member asked a question 💭

I would love to get a Rottweiller for my 3 year old autistic son. I would consider a rescue but would be afraid of not raising the two togeahter. I just worry about not having a big yard for the doggie. Ive owned 3 at once but had 2 acres fenced for them to run. Is there a differant breed that may be a better choice?

As a veterinarian, I can't resist answering this question. Sounds like you are very familiar with Rottweillers, however, I would not recommend getting a dog until your son is at least 5, or until you can tell him to respect the dog's personal space and he will listen. My HFA son is very bad at reading dog body language and he doesn't like the dogs to touch him. He has been bitten by the neighbor's dog because he startled it. The breed isn't as important as the particular dog's temperment and training. Around children, especially ASD kids, you want a "bullet proof" dog, who will never bite, even if the kids pull his ears. A Rottie would not be my first pick based on statistics, and experience. Good luck, you can google, child friendly breeds for a list. My faves are Golden Retrievers, Labs, calm mutts & Bichon Frise.

We got a rescue she is a black lab mixed and will take everything my son tries to do with her and won't react too much. I think she's almost too gental. She also keeps him from wondering off to the road by sitting in front of him and not letting him walk any further. If it won't work she will place her paws on his shoulders. She wasn't trained to do this she did it on her own. But we are considering bringing her back cause the boys are so rough with her.

Are you familiar with Cesar Milan, the "Dog Whisperer"? Here is his web site: http://www.cesarsway.com/tips/yournewdog/findin...

He devotes time to finding the dog with the right energy for you. We all love our furry friends, okay, when he wonders by dragging my bra, maybe not so much. Good luck finding the perfect dog for you and your son. Do let us know how it all works out for you, please.

Golden retriever; best dog I've ever had. Excellent with the kids.

I rescued a female pit bull mix for my family, she has a lot of patience with her. Sadie has actually been one of the best dogs I have ever had. My daughter is 11, tho, I would recommend a labrador.
