Moving To Charlotte, NC
A MyAutismTeam Member asked a question 💭

I just found out a week ago that our family is moving to Charlotte, NC in June. My husband's job will be in Pineville. Any recommendations for good public schools for a 4th grader with PDD-NOS? From scanning message boards, Union County and Cabarrus County seem to be the best options. Anyone love a particular elementary school? Thanks in advance!

As far as the best schools, it really depends on the your child. I've since enrolled at UNCC in Special Ed and I have been in quite a few different schools now. I don't think any school is going to be perfect. It can take a long time to get a child in the appropriate program. I came here thinking we would be great in any Union County school. I was very wrong. We're now homeschooling. I would try to find parents of children with similar disabilities and see what their experiences are in their local school. For example, Piedmont Middle and High School has a program for high functioning autism. You won't find that program anywhere else.

Call Jeff Gordon's Children's Hospital in Concord. Ask to have an appointment with Dr. Jean (pronounced John) Corbier. He also has an office in Huntersville. He is an autism specialist. He is worth the drive! He could probably also recommend a good school in your specific location.

I would join Charlotte Mommies and Union County Mommies and post questions there. My child has since aged out of therapies. We've used Child and Family Development for anxiety treatment. I've not found an autism doctor here. We take our child back to DC for that.
