My son has always had a problem with safty awareness and WILL climb or problem solve to get what he wants if noone will do it for him. If one of his strengths is visual, create a safety plan for him which uses visual icons. He may not process auditory reminders as well as he does visual. You can find clip art on a computer with pictures that represent the safety rules you want him to follow and put them on a piece of paper or cardboard. Teach him what they mean and what his safety plan is and then use the combination of visual and verbal reminders before he goes anywhere that there might be a safety issue. Whenever he does something unsafe you use the pictures to remind him about what his safety plan is and keep doing that every time. Do pre-teaching about safety as well - anticipate the dangers and remind him. One of your pictures might be about asking for help instead of climbing - whatever you want him to learn. Obviously it's very important that the teachers at school do this as well so you may have to convince them. If you can, look up information about using visual reminders (sometimes called PECs) and creating a safety plan and see if you can sell them on it. Your doctor can advise you and them about whether medication will be a solution or not - if it made him more able to focus and less fragmented it might help so that he could process what he's being taught. It's up to you and your physician, though, not the teachers!
