Can Anyone Tell Me If Their Child Is On An ADD Medicine?
A MyAutismTeam Member asked a question 💭

Is there enough of a difference that I should feel comfortable putting my soon to be 8 year old son on? He has weird reactions to things that usually calms others down. Caffeine, allergy medicine just make him more wired. I'm terrified it could make matters worse. He claims he has no control of his outburst or constant rebuttal. I'm mentally exhausted.

My son is 5 today and he is on strattera and tennex. It has helped so much. Different kid. However first he was on adderall and he went from high funtion to classical. You have to try a few. Stimmulants were bad for my son so we went to non stims. I still think we are needing something more but dont want to mess too much. You have to give it about a month whatever you try to see if it has the desired results.

My son is 9yrs old and takes metadate and intuiv that has worked really well with keeping hyper activity down with low dose ritalin in the afternoon during the school year. As with any medication it is truly trail and error and finding what works. I know he is happier and I can certainly tell there is a difference when he has not taken his medications. I did not make the decision for him to be on medications lightly, as I am sure we as parents all struggle with this decision. My son also see a pediatric development specialist and we love her. I think also helps when you have a Doctor that you feel like you a team with and not being just told to do this or that. I hope you are able to find what works for you and your son.

It's a process with all meds. We are on concerta for ADHD. I took him off without telling anyone just to monitor his reactions. We choose that it did calm him down to focus on his learning during school. It is only 12 hour acting and is best for our situation. But you need to way the options because they all have some type of side effect . We also found anything with red dye #40 makes him more hyper on and off his medication so we monitor that all the time.
