Any Suggestions For First IEP For My 4 Year Old, Newly Diagnosed Autistic Son?
A MyAutismTeam Member asked a question πŸ’

My son was diagnosed with autism today. He is 4 and he is now in a regular ed preschool and he never had therapy. His first IEP meeting will be held in one week. I'm totally new to this journey and I'm not sure what I should try to achieve at the first IEP meeting. Any suggestions? The psychologist who evaluated him strongly believes he should be in special ed preschool instead of his current regular ed school. Is it going to be the best decision for him to go with special ed? Very confused and… read more

make sure you bring all of your documentation, and do not let them try to push you around. If they do not want to give you services threaten them with an Advocate or attorney if they don't. You are going to need speech therapy and maybe ABA. Also I would not put a child that is having speech issues or non verbal in a regular classroom, because they will not get the help they need.

Check your school district and ask them for a Parent Advocate you have the right to have a parent advocate with you at the time of your meeting...get a hold of the parent to parent group if you have one in your community they can be of help also get a hold of the laws for the state you live in you can get a lot of these things online. with a diagnosis of Autism your child is entitled to speech, pt , ot and more...Start calling around for the info you need even your local library can offer information to groups in your area that can be of help...Good luck! back to the Parent Advocates are good to have with you because they for the most part know the ins and outs of the laws and what your child is entitled to and are familiar because of the experiences they have been through especially when it's all brand new until we as parents get the tools under our belts.Good luck...You are your childs best advocate and we only want what's best for our kids......Research is helpful

if you can get a child advocate to attend on your childs behalf it may help you.

You should ask for a draft copy of the proposed IEP so you have an idea of what they are trying to offer for services. It would also give you time to look over and go to the meeting prepared with any questions you might have. Since we don't know him, its hard to say where his placement should be.

Welcome to the club you never wanted to join. But trust me it will be ok. You sound happy with his current school. you also know your son best. So go with your instincts. It is great to have therapy integrated in special school, but he has the opportunity to meet all kinds of minds, so to speak in regular ed and you can fight for what he needs. Good luck, one day at a time!
