One thing I forgot to mention earlier is to be sure to do your homework on any suggestions from your biomed dr. as not all proposed treatments have research evidence supporting their effectiveness. A lot of the biomed research is very recent and still preliminary (small studies, lack of placebos/double-blinding, etc.) but what I personally look for is a good safety profile and at least one study published in a respectable medical journal to support effectiveness in relieving ASD symptoms.
Yes! The biggest gains we've seen have come after adding certain nutritional supplements. Traditional therapies like speech, OT, PT, social skills training, behavioral, etc. are important but those gains have been of the "slow and steady" kind. Whereas we've seen big jumps literally within days of adding acetyl-l-carnitine, Coenzyme Q10, Behavior Balance DMG, and doing a course of Nystatin. The methyl B12 injections took a bit longer (about a month) and haven't been as dramatic, but they did accelerate the rate of improvement. Now not everything our biomed dr. has had us try has worked, but the only thing that had negative side effects was the low-phenol diet, and those quickly reversed after stopping that diet. The next thing we're going to be trying is Oxytocin spray (waiting on delivery of it from Hopewell Pharmacy).
