Do they have to put them to sleep to work on them? My son has only seen a family friend who is a dentist fresh outta dental school and doesn't typically work with special needs babies. And are there special needs dentist's?
My son was terrified of the dentist (still has anxiety but we got through it). We had our ABA team build dentist/teeth brushing tolerance into his program. The routine really help tremendously! Good luck!
There are special needs dentist, I googled it and called them up first and told them that my daughter had ASD. I am straight up with the dentist and doctors... The dentist I go has machines that don't make any sounds when she is cleaning her teeth. Hope you find it in your area...
Thanks @A MyAutismTeam Member!
We have been working on the issue since he is 9 months old... and has improve tons... he nows accepts food, which before he didnt and almost had to resolve to gastric tube feeding... and I know there are others in the same situation!!
As I am always looking for info to help my son, the pdf is certainly a great source. Thank you!
I love the video, but we are not there yet. My son is four and he does not even open the mouth for brushing. So we have tried several things for him to do it alone, only to see as a result of those attemps his teeth getting yellow... so had no other option that ket him do it through out the day so he gets confortable and once a day we do a quick brush... as far as he lets us before starting a severe and aggresive meltdown... very tough on us. We know we have to clean his teeth... but this daily is not fun at all... when we take him I see no other way than some aort of anesthetic. .. maybe a mild one just to keep him calm...
