Is Slow Speech And Learning Always Autism
A MyAutismTeam Member asked a question 💭

Is a 4 year old who has problems with clear speech and difficulty with simple learning such as numbers and colors and remembering them always autism. He is very loving, talks a lot but not clearly and is very sensitive. Acts out sometimes and has always done the flapping thing.

No. There is a lot of different disabilities and learning disorders that also have the symptoms. You should get your child diagnosed by a qualified professional. Then you will have a better idea on what treatments to seek.

Other conditions have the same symptoms. One of my most helpful websites was do2learn which is about Fetal Alcohol Syndrome ... and autism.

That could be describing Autism...but it could also describe a lot different things. Any child who has trouble speaking is going to have tantrums and possibly have "odd" behaviors, but doesn't mean they have autism. Best to get a formal evaluation (or multiple) like MyZetta said. Either way it sounds like your son could benefit from intervention and services.

All 3 of my kids do the flapping, and for them it's a sensory thing. It's considered a "soft sign" of ASD in that it is common in spectrum kids but by itself it's not necessarily indicative of it. Articulation disorder is often a sign of auditory processing or oral motor issues, which aren't unusual in spectrum kids but again there would need to be additional difficulties for a diagnosis. Get on the waitlist for an eval by a developmental pediatrician or pediatric neurologist if you've got concerns. You can also request an eval through the school district, but a medical diagnosis is what's needed to get services through your health insurance and SSI if you meet the income eligibility for that program.
