Hi, we live in England but will be visiting my family in the USA for three weeks. I am worried about buying food. My son is a picky eater plus he is intolerant of dairy, wheat, banana and mango. Here in England most food is clearly labeled for food allergies, plus shops have a special "free from" section. GM food is not permitted, and most harmful artificial colors are banned.
I wondered if gluten free food is widely available in supermarkets? Do groceries have a "free from" section… read more
There are many health food stores with allergy free alternatives. They are pricey. Some include Mrs.Greens and Whole Foods.
Hi, we have been living in Cambridge this summer & have been really appreciative of the very clear allergy labeling and vegetarian labeling here.
It really depends on where in the US you are--it will be easier on either coast or in bigger cities. I don't think you will find "free from" sections, but you will find lots of gluten-free foods. If you look carefully at labels, you will find notices that prepared food has come from a facility that also processes nuts--but that's not your issue. If your main focus is avoiding dairy and wheat, you should be ok. GM you will see as GMO in the US and it is only reliably labeled at health food stores, like Whole Foods. Lots of American kids have dairy/wheat issues. And adults, of course. As for bananas and mangoes, my husband and son have managed to avoid those for years with no trouble :)
Good luck! Enjoy!
