My 7 year old daughter smears poop on the bathroom walls on occasion any one have any tips on how to correct the behavior I just moved to Kentucky so I haven't found a behavioral specialist yet
I am a caregiver for a child on the spectrum but I am also the mother to two neurotypical children. We had this same problem when my boys were young. They both did it at different ages. I know that what works with typical children may not work with kids on the spectrum, but you never know till you try. I always made them participate in the clean up, but also they had to take a shower, and the water would be cold. I know that sounds harsh but they eventually associated playing with their poop and the unpleasant experience of taking a cold shower.
This is a biomedical problem. When I removed juice, sugars on my son's diet, his stool no longer was mushy and painfully acidic (that was why he smeared his feces because the acidic stool which touchs him hurts his skin). When he was on the Specific Carbohydrate Diet with low sweet foods, no juice, the feces smearing stopped immediately, and his stool was formed, like a torpedo shape, no more runny/mushy stool for smearing.
My son used to do that too for quite a few years and we didn't have the Asperger's diagnosis nor see a developmental specialist until he was 12. I would buy the disinfectant wipes and make him clean it off, and wash his hands. He also missed the toilet lots when peeing and it took me awhile to figure it out...he is very OCD and he would not touch his privates to aim...he would only bend his body and when in a hurry or distracted he'd move to look at something and spray the wall. I don't know why he would still touch the poop but I make him clean his own bathroom to this day (even if it is hard to get him motivated...) but I have to buy the handi pop up wipes and we all prefer the orange scented ones and I call him in if I go to use it and it is a mess. I would do that with all my kids and even though he has a lot of disorders... we did not know about then...he does know it is gross. He quit doing the Poop smear thing eventually, and he is better about not leaving a mess but the disinfectant wipes are right next to the TP and he knows how to wipe up after himself or he gets called back while I stand waiting and watch.
Where are you located in KY? I live in Lexington.
Also, my son used to do this too and we never really found anything to stop him at that time. He did this at 3 and he just stopped doing it one day.
At the time, he did not have a behavioral therapist. Also, we have a waiver called the Michelle P Waiver in KY which helps pay for services and therapies if needed. Sorry that I didn't have more info on smearing poop. I hope you find an answer soon!
Good luck with your move and finding the resources you need. I thought about what I said that I didn't know why about the poop smear thing but on further thought he still is tremendously OCD but with quirks if you know what I mean, perhaps he just couldn't wipe himself accurately and whatever he got on his hand he immediately wipes it off, and getting it off on his shirt (which he wears all the food from meals on) could NOT be the answer for pooh so he would wipe it on the wall instead before he finished and washed. His working memory is so low that everything is out of sight, and out of MIND,...and he will never claim it or own up or fess up...even when he is the only child (my youngest)left to have done something with nobody to blame it on..and he still says it isn't me! He used to wipe boogers on the living room furniture too...probably more convenient than getting up to get a tissue. If I ignored the issue with him and cleaned it up when I discovered it...he of course could not remember but it would not have gone away. Temple Grandin tells about Autism first hand about learning from within the world of autism as well as and this other lady (Jennifer ?) that had Aspergers and Consulted with Temple to write her book (I can't think of her name right now but she wears a lot of hats and speaks about her book in places too...)anyway she said, Autistic kids need more time to learn LIFE Skills than others. It needs to be painstakingly repetitious or by rote learning. Since we did not get diagnosed til age 12 I still am reading up on it but it would explain why it took so long for this issue to go away. I just joined this sight and I have never done facebook or anything and I would gladly share emails with you if you would further speak...thanks
