Sam didn't say a word until he ws about 3 1/2. Started with one word here and thre. It wasnt until he was 6 that he had the speech of a child about the age of two.

My son just turned 5 and just started really trying to communicate, around age 4 he was saying some sounds and words with prompts but nothing spontaneous. At age 5 there is now some spontaneous language but still developmentally probably that of a 2-3 yr old. But again, my son has made huge gains!!!

I didn't catch on for a while that my DD was pretty much only repeating words rather than using them spontaneously. She had a fair number of words that she would use by age 2 but it was virtually all echolalic. By 3 she was using single words spontaneously and a few scripted phrases (e.g. "I want ___"). She's now 4 1/2 and while she's still got delayed expressive language, she is talking in full sentences. She sounds like a NT kid of about 3.
