He seems to do this at all times regardless of whether he is anxious, relaxed, watching tv, etc. We have a hard time trying to stop it. We've done fidget toys, bandages, deep pressure massages, etc.
A couple of years ago my son did the picking on his arms until he made himself bleed. And even though it seemed to increase when he was anxious or bored, he was doing it all the time subconsciously. I was so worried. The behavior was not only harming him physically, but he was also harming himself socially. The kids at school thought it was gross (teachers too) and he certainly did not need another issue to further ostracize himself from his peers. I worked with the teachers and my pediatrician to try to stop the behavior. Because I was desperate to stop it as soon as possible - I tried all the strategies at the same time. So unfortunately, I can not pin point which strategy actually "fixed" the issue. I can just share what we tried. The pediatrician suggested it was a "tick" brought on by the medication. (In addition to Aspergers, my son is diagnosed with ADHD and scored "off the charts" for impulsivity disorder. So he does take medication for this). We reduced the dose. This did not change the behavior but did cause him to struggle in school. So then we changed his medication. The doctor explained that there are many types available and it is sort of like allergy pills. There are many choices of allergy pills and what works great for one person may not work at all for another. And then at the same time I worked with his teachers. It was winter so I sent him to school in long sleeves that fit snug. We also put pieces of Velcro tape on his desk, in his desk, and on his chair. This gave him something to do with his fingers that wasn't causing harm to himself. At home I made him wear gloves. (Which he hated because it greatly interfered with playing on his DS. ). Somehow one of these or a combination of these worked. However, he now will pick glue off of tables or desks...Everywhere. I feel like the medication was the cause. It was explained to me that he had the picking "tick" inh
My Daughter did and still does occasionally. they put her on prozac and it seemed to stop it. she also stopped as she aged. it is a frustrating "tick". My daughter has eccolachea(sp) we dont know what to do for it. so many different ticks our kids have it is hard to get them all fixed.

my son started this when we put him on adhd meds. I picked his entire nail off a few months ago. I haven't found anything to help, and there is no way he'll let me put gloves on him. When he's asleep, I do trim nails/cuticles and put a cuticle oil on.
In him but that the medication exaggerated it. He seems to always have some sort of quirk or tick. But I am thankful that he isn't harming himself anymore.
