How Does A 21 Yr. Old Autistic Get A High School Diploma AFTER High School
A MyAutismTeam Member asked a question 💭

My son is 21 and attends our local community college. He's there to get his GED because his high school "decided" to give him a local diploma because they felt he "couldn't do it". Turns out..with alot of support...HE CAN do it.. I am pushing hard to get this GED for him, but Math always sets him back. He can't pass it because the kids have behavioral problems, not special needs. Big difference!! They are all HS dropouts!! Why can't there be a way for my son to get a high school diploma without… read more

My 14yo/9th grade son was diagnosed with Dyscalculia last year. He has struggled in math since 1st grade. He's unable to memorize addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, and has problems with some order of operations. It's rare. It's in the same brain area as Dyslexia. It's a disorder diagnosed by a psychiatrist. I learned about it while watching an HBO special about learning disabilities on "On Demand" cable. One child profile totally matched my son. Our psychiatrist and clinic of 40+ doctors hadn't heard of it. We were referred to Univ of Wisc-Madison's Psychiatry Department. He/I had a 3 hour evaluation and we went back twice more for testing. Now his IEP states he has this disorder and he's allowed to use a calculator on all math work, including quizzes and tests. There is one state-based test where it's allowed, but national tests will not. Because it's in his IEP before graduating, he'll have this right/protection in college.
