I was told that the average age for kids on the spectrum to develop speech is between 4-5 yrs old. Does anyone have a child once non-verbal later speaking in sentences?
We started speech therapy with my daughter at around 2 and a half years of age. She was non-verbal. We started with sign language. Before her fourth birthday she started to say a few words. It wasn't long after that she started talking more and more. She is 5 years old now. She talks all the time. She can talk in sentences, read books , and sing songs. Needless to say at one point her speech therapist told us she would probably not ever talk. Just keep up the hope and encouragement!
Yup. My son was not conversational for about four years. He might have said a word here or there and that was it. He did not babble or make sound effects. But now converses like crazy. He wants to talk about his favorite tv shows , video games , books etc he is seven now .. we did intensive Aba with Asl. We even didn’t have speech therapy for a year. I also did a few months of RPM. That was a turning point for him. Rapid Prompting Method with the strips of paper on his favorite topic of fire engines.
